The BBC runs a number of music-centric radio stations. The main four national popular music stations are:

Radio 1 playing pop music for a younger audience – with an emphasis on new music. 

Radio 1Xtra playing black music.

Radio 2 playing pop music for an older audience – with a mix of new and older music.

Radio 6music playing alternative music – with a mix of new and older music.

Each of those stations has a playlist, which dictates most of the music that is played during daytime shows. These are split into A, B and C, with tracks on the A-list being played more frequently.

The BBC also obviously operates Radio 3, which plays mainly classical music. 

It also now runs some other genre specific music services on DAB digital radio and within the BBC Sounds app, including Radio 1 Anthems, Radio 1 Dance and Radio 3 Unwind.
